Popups and popunders

Popups are those annoying windows that open as additional pages when you click on a link or exit a page. Popunders are much the same, except that they creep in behind the new page, and only become apparent when you close it. I find them annoying and close them automatically without looking, but some people seem to like them if they provide more buying choices. They also provide an income for the sites owner, so they may serve a useful purpose from that point of view. What is particularly bad is the "popup hell" that can be generated by some sites exiting with popups to a site that also has popups. You only need one site to point to a site that was loaded earlier, for you to have an unbreabable loop. The only alternative is to turn off your machine. Actually that's not true, and I will be looking at some popup killers and avoidance techniques later. Some site give the invoking page an option to turn off popups. Here is one such site. Click on the link and look in the address bar.

No popups with this link.

You'll see that at the end of the URL I've added the parameter "&p=clean". This is an option that the owners of Top Shelf Pussy have given me, and I think it is indicative of an honest responsible attitude.

Here is another responsible site with a slightly different approach. They include one simple popup to provide additional information. Click on this link and you will see what I mean.

One entry popunder and one exit popup only.

The popunder page gives you links to several related sites. All of these are owned by the same group, and they are intended to give you a bit more choice in case your original link wasn't quite what you wanted.

I'll add a page about "popup hell" and how to handle it over the next few days.
